New European regulation on detergents and surfactants

New European regulation on detergents and surfactants

The European Union has adopted Regulation (EU) 2026/405, replacing Regulation (EC) No. 648/2004 and introducing new requirements for detergents and surfactants.

The main changes include:

  • Stronger biodegradability requirements.
  • A ban on animal testing.
  • The Digital Product Passport (DPP).
  • New labelling rules, including digital solutions.
  • Specific rules for refill products and microbial cleaning products.
  • Greater traceability throughout the supply chain.

Although in force since March 2026, the regulation will apply only from 23 September 2029, giving companies time to adapt.
