Contains probiotics: health claims in food supplements

Did you know that the expression “contains probiotics” may constitute a health claim?

Using “contains probiotics”, or an equivalent expression, on food supplements goes beyond simply identifying an ingredient.

Indicating the presence of probiotics conveys to consumers that the product may provide a health benefit and is therefore considered a health claim.

There are currently no approved health claims for probiotics in the European Union.

Consequently, use of the term “probiotic” or equivalent expressions on food supplements is not authorised.

PhaRegistrum supports the regulatory assessment of food supplements to ensure compliance before they are marketed.
